Men of The Word

We are going into the 2nd week of reading "Men of the Word". The first week came and went. . We read through to chapter 3 last week and will be reading through to chapter 6 this next 2 weeks. We had a great meeting at Starbucks, we talked about the Faith and where our faith should be placed.

" Faith is defined by a confident trust in and full dependence on the only right object of faith- GOD HIMSELF"  (Men of the word pg 13)

If you put your faith in anything but the One True God it is worth less. You might as well have a rabbit foot on your key chain, and remember the rabbit had 4 feet and it brought him no luck. Where do you place your faith?  Money, job, parents, insurance, ect?

Faith must be in the God of the bible. Why the bible? Because it is the word of God, the only place we can learn about this God to whom we have faith in.

How goes the reading this week? How has God talked to you threw His word?

What does JC Ryle mean when he says "Tell me what a man's prayers are and I will soon tell you the state of his soul" ?

Another thing: "Are we content with halfhearted requests uttered as we drift off to sleep instead of enjoying the awesome privilege of deep communion with God Him self?"
(Men if the Word PG 48)

I have way to often but what stands out to me about this statement is the word "enjoying" do you enjoy communion 1 on 1 with God in Prayer?

Ryle is communicating that we can evaluate ourselves or someone else's spiritual condition by the substance of our/their prayer life. If someone is praying to win the lottery or to hook up with some hot chick that they've met or other temperal fleshly things, then their spiritual condition is in a pitiful state; but someone who is genuinely seeking to be in alignment with Gods will who is going before God humbly praying for things that have been revealed in His word obviously has an authentic relationship to with God.

Or it may be even a little more subtle than that ... you can pray for no trials in your life (or remove trial) instead of asking God to work out His will in the trials ... you can pray for a knowledge of Scripture and wisdom and not for a knowledge of who God is (the reason we study Scripture) ...

We must ensure our prayers are Biblically-sound. Things may seem to be holy, but may not be. I think Ryle is speaking along those lines.

Do you hear a flippant, casual pray of "thank you for this day ..." or do you hear a person's heart break over the lost in his neighborhood.

"God has provided us with everything we need to walk in integrity. His work of regeneration has given us a new heart (2Cor5:17). His Spirit empowers us to obey (Ro 8:1-11). His spiritual armor enables us to resist the deceptive attacks of the evil one(Eph 6:10-18). And His divine power has granted us everything pertaining to life and godliness(2Pe 1:3)."pg.96. How does all this link together with Ro.7? How do we know if we're really walking in integrity? I constantly fail to obey and to resist temptation. Like Paul I find myself "doing the very thing I hate." Pg.97 says, "When we walk according to that Word, applying its truth to every area of our lives, we can be confident that we are pleasing Him and walking with integrity." I think the key word here is "applying" are we really succeeding in making application in every area of our lives? How can we really be confident that we're pleasing the Lord? Application seems to be very difficult at times, understandibly in light of Ga5:17.
